Gay Men Appreciation Day
(September 4th)
I started Gay Men Appreciation Day in 2024 as a way to celebrate all the wonderful gay men (cis and trans) who have done so much for the whole community over the decades.
You may not know, but there are Awareness Days for every letter of the acronym (some have multiple days and weeks) except for gay men. I thought this was a shame as there have been many wonderful gay men that have shown up for the whole community for literally hundreds of years.
And another lgbtq+ awareness day is never a bad thing.
I chose September 4th as that was the day the Wolfenden Report came out. Four gay men, back in 1954-1957, spoke to a panel of cishet people about how and why they were queer, in order to get laws changed in the UK. Such a brave thing to do back then.
So this day will continue, to remember & celebrate the gay men of the past who outed themselves at great personal risk (not just the Wolfenden Report) to change hearts and minds and laws, and for the gay men today who continue to fight for everyone in the LGBTQ+ community.
This day is for ALL gay men: Cis, trans, non-binary, all races, ethnicities, abilities and neurotypes.
